5th Grade Zoo Crew

As one last hurrah for the year, Matthews Elementary 5th graders along with Mrs, Kenedy, Miss Polk, Officer Townley, Mrs. Melanie and Mrs. Yates, spent the day at the Zoo in Memphis.  Traipsing through the "wild" in search of lions, elephants and  of course, pandas; While also enjoying the Ripleys Believe It or Not exhibit and taking a moment to pet the stingrays at Stingray Bay.  The weather was perfect for the trek around the zoo and also to take a moment to soak our feet in the wading pools at the entrance of the zoo.

We will miss our 5th graders as they move on to the Middle School, but we were glad to take this opportunity to celebrate all that they have accomplished in their studies here at Matthews!!

Starting early in the fall, Mrs. Johnsons third, fourth and fifth grade music classes at Matthews Elementary began the process of bringing Seussical Jr. to the stage; transporting the audience to the Jungle of Nool as The Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers, in a speck of dust, the tiny people called "Whos".

The show was enjoyed by students, staff, parents and grandparents alike!  Please see our Facebook Page for more photos of the awesome performance!

Pre-School Play Day

This year has come and gone so quickly and Mrs. Kristi's Pre-school students have learned so much!  To reward the Morning and Afternoon classes for all of their hard work this year they had "Play Day!"

The kids got to enjoy play time on the bounce house, at the playground and had a "going away" party in the classroom to celebrate the end of school and their advancement to Kindergarten!

We hope all of Mrs. Kristi's kids have a safe and happy summer!!! See you in August .. Kindergartners!!!

In April, Mrs. Jami Geske with the Missouri Farm Bureau came to Matthews Elementary and spoke with the third grade class about recognizing agricultural benefits all around southeast Missouri.  One of the assignments left by Mrs. Geske was to create a picture to show case either a crop or animal that we find beneficial to our region.  The winning picture was then chosen to be put on a t-shirt for the class.  The winning design was by Quentin Hart!!

Although school is almost out for the summer, Miss Delisle's third grade class is still hard at work!  This week the students studied a weather lesson about hurricanes and all the havoc they can cause whether they are out in the ocean or when they make landfall.

Students were tasked with designing and building homes out of different materials to see which ones would be able to withstand hurricane force winds from a category one hurricane to a category 5.  The materials used included were popsicle sticks, copy paper, pipe cleaner, tape and a fan.
