Since 1922 Fire Prevention week is observed to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. The theme for 2017 is “Every Second Counts” This year’s message works to better educate the public about the importance of developing a home escape plan and practicing it. Chief Dave McClarty and Firefighter Dana Perry visited Lilbourn Elementary School students in pre-school through second grade to talk about this. Some of the topics discussed were to teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
Students got to see a firefighter in his full protective gear. This helps children get more comfortable with firefighters, who could seem intimidating while dressed in full protective gear. Students also got to go outside and look inside the firetruck and see all the tools that firefighters use.
